Introduction
Pennyroyal is an Essential oil and herbal extract or oil derived from leaves of the plant in the mint genus (Mentha pulegium)
that was used in the past as an insect repellent and an abortifacient.
Pennyroyal,
Mentha pulegium,
is a downy perennial that grows in western,
southern,
and central Europe;
Asia; Iran;
and Ethiopia.
It is naturalized in North America.
The medicinal portion,
the essential oil,
is extracted from the fresh plant or dried aerial parts.
When taken by mouth,
Excessive consumption of pennyroyal oil is toxic and has been linked
to several instances of toxic liver injury and death.

Pennyroyal is a plant.
The leaves, and the oil they contain,
are used to make medicine.
Despite serious safety concerns,
pennyroyal is used for the common cold,
pneumonia,
fatigue, ending a pregnancy (abortion),
and as an insect repellant,
but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.
In manufacturing,
pennyroyal oil is used as a dog and cat flea repellent,
and as a fragrance for detergents,
perfumes,
and soaps.
Pennyroyal is applied to the skin to kill germs,
keep insects away,
and treat skin diseases.
It is also used topically for gout,
venomous bites,
and mouth sores;
and as a flea-killing bath.
In foods, pennyroyal is used for flavoring.
